Veterans of Foreign Wars
The Veterans of Foreign Wars organization originated in 1899 when veterans from the Spanish-American War and Philippine Insurrection founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service. These veterans arrived home wounded or sick — with no medical support or pensions available.
Historical Growth
The movement expanded significantly, with chapters formed in Ohio, Colorado, and Pennsylvania gaining momentum. Membership reached 5,000 by 1915 and nearly 200,000 by 1936.
Major Achievements
The VFW has been instrumental in:
- Establishing the Veterans Administration
- Creating GI Bills for the 20th and 21st centuries
- Developing the national cemetery system
- Advocating for Vietnam veterans exposed to Agent Orange
- Supporting veterans with Gulf War Syndrome
- Securing passage of a GI Bill for the 21st Century in 2008, providing expanded educational benefits
- Contributing to memorials honoring Vietnam, Korean War, and World War II veterans
- Opening the Disabled Veterans for Life Memorial in 2010
Community Impact
Nearly 2 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliaries contribute more than 8.6 million hours of volunteerism annually. The organization provides over $3 million in college scholarships each year.

No One Does More For Veterans
Join the Veterans of Foreign Wars
If you are an active-duty service member, National Guard or Reserve member, or veteran who has served overseas in a combat zone or received campaign service medals, you are eligible to join VFW Post 6837.
Eligibility
- Received a campaign medal for overseas service
- Served 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days in Korea
- Received hostile fire or imminent danger pay
This includes veterans from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, and all other eligible overseas operations.

Complete the Membership Application and email it to [email protected]. Our Senior Vice Commander or Adjutant will follow up with you.
Annual Dues
$37 per year — due on the anniversary of your join date.
